Nokomis Girls Defeat Belfast 49-39

Tourney 2013 has begun, and the Nokomis Warriors defeated the Belfast Lions as the final tourney to be played at the Bangor Auditorium starts.

Nokomis jumped out to a early 15-7 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter, with scoring concentrated in the hands of two players for the Warriors, Taylor Shaw had 9 while Anna Mackenzie scored 6 points. For Belfast Lexi Nelligan had 4 points.

In then 2nd Quarter Belfast stepped up their defense and took advantage of the Warriors foul trouble. Belfast went 7-10 from the free throw line, and cut the lead at the half to 2, as Nokomis led 20-18. Belfast outscored Nokomis 11-5 in the 2nd Quarter.

The 3rd Quarter was tentative as both teams played well defensively. Belfast scored 7 points while Nokomis scored 8, and at the end of the 3rd Quarter Nokomis led 28-23.

Belfast took the first lead of the game with 5:05 remaining 29-28. But Kelsie Richards answered for Nokomis. She was scoreless going into the 4th Quarter but drained a 3 pointer and Nokomis led 31-29. It was a lead they would never relinquish. She scored another basket with 3:36 left and Nokomis led 33-29. Lexi Nelligan went 2-2 from the free throw line for Belfast with 3:30 left and Nokomis led 33-31. Traci Carson for Nokomis went 2-2 from the free throw line and Nokomis led 35-31 with 2:45 left. Nelligan answered for the Lions with 2:14 left and it was 35-33. Mikayla Charters went 1-2 from the free throw line with 2:07 left and Nokomis led 36-33. Kelsie Richards drained a basket for Nokomis with 1:27 left and the Warrriors led 38-33. Nelligan scored for the Lions with 1:21 left, but missed the free throw after she was fouled and it was 38-35 Nokomis. Carson scored a bucket for Nokomis with 1:02 left making it 40-35. Courtney Drinkwater scored for Belfast with 45.8 seconds remaining and the Nokomis lead was 40-37. Carson then went 1-2 from the free throw line for Nokomis and Kelsie Richards scored and sank the free throw after being fouled and then went 2-2 from the free throw line and with 21.9 seconds left Nokomis led 46-37. Drinkwater scored the final points for Belfast and with 6.5 seconds left Anna Mackenzie scored and sank the free throw to give Nokomis the 49-39 victory.

Kelsie Richards was the leading scorer for Nokomis with 12 points including a 3 pointer. Nokomis went 17-22 from the free throw line. Lexi Nelligan was the leading scorer for Belfast with 20 points and the Lions went 11-15 from the line.

Nokomis will play on Wednesday against the winner of the Oceanside-Camden Hills game.
