MDI Girls Defeat Old Town

Mackenzie Gymnasium in Old Town has been a tough place to play for the MDI Lady Trojans the past years. That wasn't the case on Tuesday, January 29th as the MDI Trojans defeated Old Town by the score of 67-48. With the win, MDI improves to 13-2 while Old Town falls to 7-9 with a week and a half remaining in the season.

MDI jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, as Abby Jewett scored, followed by Hannah Shaw and a Sara Phelps 3 and with 5:28 left MDI was up 7-0. Old Town got on the scoreboard with 5:20 remaining when Kelsey Hesseltine went 1-2 from the free throw line, and MDI was up 7-1. MDI then went on a 8-0 run as Emily Lewis scored, Hannah Shaw went 1-2 from the free throw line, Lewis went 1-2 from the line, Shaw sank a basket and Lewis another basket and with 2:48 left, MDI was up top 15-1. Rachel Martin scored for Old Town with 2:28 left, then Hannah Shaw scored again for MDI giving her 7 points in the first quarter and it was 17-3 MDI with 1:23 remaining. Lauren Martin scored and hit the free throw after being fouled for Old Town, and the 1st Quarter ended with the score MDI 17 Old Town 6.

MDI went on a 8-0 run to start the 2nd Quarter. Sara Norberg came into the game and instantly drained a 3 pointer followed by Hannah Shaw scoring back to back baskets and completing the 3 point play after being fouled and MDI led 25-6 with 5:13 left. Kelsey Maxim scored for Old Town with 4:35 left and then Emily Lewis swished a 3 pointer for the Trojans and MDI led 28-8 with 2:56 left. Old Town then went on a 7-0 run. Brooke Cole scored two baskets and Brittany Cousins scored and Kelsey Hesseltine went 1-2 from the free throw line and with 7.6 seconds left, MDI was up top 28-15. The scoring ended when Sara Phelps went 1-2 from the free throw line and the lead was 14, 29-15 MDI

In the 3rd Quarter Abby Jewett started the scoring for MDI going 2-2 from the free throw line, followed by a Hesseltine basket and Kelsey Maxim going 1-2 from the free throw line and it was 31-18 with 7:00 left. Jewett and Myrick scored for MDI and with 6:05 left it was 35-18. Brooke Cole went 2-2 from the line, Jewett scored a basket for MDI, followed by another Cole basket for Old Town and a Lewis basket for MDI and with 4:342 remaining in the 3rd Quarter MDI led 39-22. MDI increased the lead to 44-22 after Sara Phelps drained a 3 pointer anda basket with 3:21 left. Kate Rawson scored her 2 points in the game for Old Town with 2:05 left and then Bailey Burr went 2-2 from the line for MDI followed by a Kelsey Shaw basket for MDI and a Molly Carroll basket and free throw after being fouled and with 54.2 seconds left, it was 51-24 MDI. Kelsey Hesseltine got the Coyote faithful on their feet draining two long 3 pointers in the last 40 seconds of the 3rd Quarter and that's how the scored ended with MDI on top 51-30.

Rachel Martin scored for Old Town to start the 4th Quarter scoring, then Kelsey Shaw hit a basket for MDI followed by a Rachel Martin 3 pointer for Old Town and with 7:00 left Kelsey Shaw went 1-2 from the line for MDI and the lead was 54-35. Brook Cole went 2-2 for Old Town from the free throw line, then Hannah Shaw scored for MDI and with 5:57 left the Trojans led the Coyotes 56-37. Cole went 1-2 from the line and Karah Hussey scored for Old Town and it was 56-40 MDI with 5:08 remaining in the game. Cole then drained a 3 pointer for Old Town followed by a Hannah Shaw basket for MDI and another Cole basket for Old Town with 2:10 remaining. That made the score MDI 60 Old Town 45. Hannah Shaw then went 2-2 from the free throw line, before Kelsey Maxim drained a 3 pointer for Old Town making the score 62-48. MDI scored the last 5 points of the game as Hannah Shaw made a basket and Emily Lewis scored a basket and then went 1-2 from the free throw line. The final score was MDI 67 Old Town 48.

MDI finishes the season at Washington Academy on Thursday January 31, and home against Hermon on Tuesday February 5 and against Ellsworth on Thursday February 7. The MDI - Hermon and MDI - Ellsworth games may be heard on WDEA AM 1370 as well as online at WDEA Internet Radio. Old Town finishes their season at John Bapst on Tuesday February 5th and home against Washington Academy on Thursday February 7.
